Covid was the wake-up I needed to remember why I became a Lawyer. Growing up in country Victoria I set out with an ambition of helping people and small business operators like the ones I had grown up visiting in regional Victoria.
When I finished my law degree 13 years ago, I sought out top legal training and skills in commercial law. I immediately joined one of Australia's largest independent law firms. After 3 years drafting, reviewing and advising on contracts for both large private corporate and government clients, I then joined a large legal team at Telstra. During my time at Telstra I specialised in Contract Law and providing clear and practical commercial legal advice.
Covid resulted in a great deal of challenges for small to medium business operators. I found myself being contacted by friends and family about sale and supply and contract issues in their small businesses. I felt frustrated that my ability to help was limited due to my commitment and obligations to my in-house lawyer role.
Then and now in my own practice, dealing with decision makers of SME companies has opened my eyes to how contracts are often too hard for business owners, so they either don't have one or sign one without reading it. Opening my own practice in the western suburbs of Melbourne 12 months ago has reminded me why a became a lawyer. I now get to witness first-hand the appreciation and more importantly the relief when I assist a business owner with the ‘Legal Stuff'.
